Montana House votes to rename Columbus Day

Goodbye Columbus? The House of Representatives approved the second reading of a bill Tuesday to have school commemorations drop Columbus Day observances and replace them with Montana Heritage Day, capping an emotional debate in which heavy criticism was launched against the famed Italian explorer credited with discovering America in 1492.

House Bill 514, sponsored by Rep. Bridget Smith, D-Wolf Point, passed 73-27. It must go through a third reading before moving over to the Senate. The bill calls for all districts to have “appropriate exercises” during that day. Smith said misrepresentations of Columbus replaced the truth in which Christopher Columbus mistreated indigenous people.
