Tuesday August 6th • 7:00pm. The Italian Cultural Foundation at Casa Belvedere. 79 Howard Avenue, Staten Island, New York, New York 10301. The second half of the 20th century is the most transformative period of time in the history of Italian culture, and the new role that women start occupying in post-war society is a clear signal of this transformation: the right to vote, the birth of a feminist movement, the right to divorce, and many other milestones are usually seen as crucial conquests in the fight for women rights in Italy.
However, these advancements also clashed with the underlying patriarchal structure of Italian society and the objectification of women emerging in mass media at the turn of the 21st century. In this lecture, Dr. Sorrentino will reflect on all these aspect relating to the history of women in Italy, offering various perspectives on the topic. The lecture will include the screening of a brief documentary on the representation of women on Italian television.
