Design: Vignelli presents the brilliant multidisciplinary approach of the Vignellis, from designs for corporate identity programs including American Airlines, Bloomingdale’s, and Benetton, to signage for the New York subway system. Their firm was also notable for its interior and furniture design, designs for magazines and newspapers, glassware and tableware, and an exhaustive collection of book designs. Many of these works have been cited as masterpieces of 20th century design and are included in the design collection of the Museum of Modern Art as well as in many other important museum collections.
The graphics, interiors, and products designed by Vignelli Associates have been internationally recognized for their refined aesthetics, evolving modernity, and crisp execution since the 1960s, and this authoritative volume is dedicated to the work of Lella Vignelli and Massimo Vignelli, two of the 20th century’s most important graphic designers.
All of this work, produced in the Vignelli’s New York headquarters since the 1960s is featured, as well as rarely seen early work produced in their native Italy. Design: Vignelli will be a reference book on this influential firm for decades to come, and will be an essential volume for the library of anyone with an interest in 20th and 21st century design. The book also features essays by Germano Celant, Mildred Constantine, David Revere McFadden, Joseph Rykwert, Steven Heller, Kenneth Frampton, Yoshiki Waterhouse, and Debbie Millman.
Magazzino Italian Art Foundation co-founders Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu have sponsored the production of the book Design: Vignelli, which will become a future reference in the work and philosophy of two iconic Italian designers. All design materials and publications at Magazzino Italian Art are produced by Yoshiki Waterhouse and Beatriz Cifuentes-Caballero of Waterhouse Cifuentes Design. The studio builds upon over fifteen years of work with their mentor Massimo Vignelli for international clients, as well as decades of Vignelli design philosophy, discipline, and practice. Their work has received many design awards, and is now part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
