Calabretta-Sajder Publishes a New Book on Italian American Media

Ryan Calabretta-Sajder, assistant professor of Italian, recently co-edited Italian Americans on Screen: Challenging the Past, Re-Theorizing the Future, with Alan Gravano (Lexington Books, 2021). The edited collection reconsiders Robert Casillo's definition of Italian-American cinema as "appl[ying] to works by Italian-American directors who treat Italian-American subjects" to expand this classification. More specifically, it situates Italian-American cinema and media within the contemporary and intersectional (race, class, gender, sexuality) debates about ethnic identity.

Given the ever broader, competing, and, at times, conflicting concepts of migration in culture and media studies—from exile and diaspora, page to screen, theory to application—this project links past scholarship to theoretical underpinnings with new hermeneutical approaches in television and film.
