Join Scuola Italiana di Portland and Cerulean Wine Bar (1439 NW Marshall Street, Portland, OR) for a FREE discussion on Italian Art by Jesse Locker, Ph.D. entitled Artemisia Gentileschi: Art and Gender in Baroque Italy on January 6, 2018 at 2:00pm. Enjoy delicious local wine while learning about Italian culture from an expert in the field of Italian Renaissance and Baroque art.
Painting at a time when few women were professional artists, Artemisia Gentileschi specialized in sometimes shocking portrayals of powerful heroines such as Judith, Susanna, Jael. This talk explores the history of female artists in Italy and how Artemisia overcame seemingly insurmountable odds to achieve recognition in Rome, Florence, Naples, and London.
Jesse Locker is Associate Professor of Italian Renaissance and Baroque art at Portland State University and author of Artemisia Gentileschi: The Language of Painting (Yale University Press, 2015)
