Groppi's Food Market, a longtime Bay View neighborhood fixture, is getting new owners. Brothers Casey and Ryan Foltz have agreed to purchase the business, 1441 E. Russell Ave., Milwaukee, from John and Anne Nehring, who've owned the store for 20 years. That transaction could close by year's end once the new owners secure a city tavern license for the market's small bar, Foltz told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
"Our plan is to keep it the same as Groppi's has been," he said. "There's a bit of a tradition in the corner grocery store." The pending transaction doesn't include the 3,700-square-foot building, which the Foltz brothers will lease from the Nehrings, Foltz said. The Nehrings bought Groppi's in 2003 − several months after the traditional Italian grocery closed. The Groppi family started the business in 1913.
