Chris Vecchitto, 90, is widely remembered for his friendly smile and his famously tasty Italian ices. Vecchitto died Feb. 27 at Middlesex Hospital Hospice Unit after his health quickly declined in the wake of a January fall at home, his wife said.

A Middletown native, Vecchito was one of 11 children born to Italian immigrants Gaetano and Giovanina Vecchitto. Married for 61 years, he lived with his wife, Rosemarie, in a riverfront condo in the city for the past decade.
