Planning a trip to Europe? Why not make a quick stop in Rome, the Eternal City. Alitalia, the flag carrier airline of Italy, is currently offering free stopovers up to three nights long for their passengers. If you’re wondering what a stopover is, allow me to explain. It’s basically an intentionally long layover so you can actually spend some time in a city before your connecting flight leaves for your next destination.
Here’s the kicker, though: the flight to Rome, the stopover, and your flight to the next destination are all technically one flight, one ticket. You’re not paying for a flight to Rome, then a flight to, say, Paris—you’re just paying for a flight to Paris that happens to be stopping over in Rome for a few days.
