The cancer cells of the body are able to circumvent our natural defenses, preventing our immune system to attack. Many new details on this mechanism have been brought to light by a study conducted at the Hospital Bambin Gesù of Rome and by the Department of Experimental Medicine of the University of Genoa.
The study in question was published in the "Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology". In practice, researchers have noted the existence of a sort of switch present on the surface of Natural Killer cells (Nk) of the immune system. This switch (PD-1) is employed by the tumor to neutralize the defenses and anti-cancer. But let's try to understand how this works. Nk cells recognize and destroy infected cells.
