Genoa in Liguria hosted the presentation of the new made in Italy prototype artificial foot called “SoftFoot Pro”. This device, developed by the Soft Robotics for Human Cooperation and Rehabilitation Unit of the Italian Institute of Technology, represents an important innovation in the field of technological prostheses for people with disabilities and humanoid robots of the future.

SoftFoot Pro is an internationally unique prototype. Its design has been granted two international patents, while a third patent is currently being evaluated at the European Patent Office. Unlike traditional prostheses, SoftFoot Pro is inspired by the anatomy of the human foot and features a structure that can deform and adapt autonomously to obstacles and different surfaces.

This improvement increases the naturalness of the individual's stride and stability, even on terrain that is not perfectly smooth.

The mechanism of SoftFoot Pro consists of a titanium arch connected to 5 chains of high-strength plastic material, which simulate the bone structure of the human foot. Each chain is connected by a pair of elastic bands and crossed longitudinally by a high mechanical performance cable. This architecture makes it possible to replicate the “windlass” mechanism, which evenly discharges the force applied during stepping, contributing to walking efficiency.

In addition, the freedom of movement of the distal elements that make up each chain allows for increased grip on sloping terrain, improving safety for SoftFoot Pro wearers. Finally, thanks to the flexibility of the toes and the arching movements of the sole of the foot and back, everyday gestures such as walking up and down stairs or tying shoes are possible.
