The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) has designated Abruzzo and Molise as the "Regions of Honor" for 2027, a prestigious recognition that highlights the cultural and historical significance of these two central Italian regions. This honor was announced at a special event in Washington, D.C., attended by key representatives from the regions and NIAF leadership.
The ceremony was part of NIAF’s ongoing efforts to foster connections between the United States and Italy, and to celebrate the contributions of Italian Americans to both nations. The choice of Abruzzo and Molise underscores the profound bond between these regions and the United States, where a large number of Italian Americans trace their roots. Both regions have a rich history of immigration to the U.S., with many of their descendants still maintaining close ties with their ancestral homeland.
Representatives from Abruzzo and Molise expressed their pride and gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the regions’ unique cultural heritage. The event highlighted the historical migration waves that brought Italian immigrants, particularly from these regions, to the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, their descendants contribute significantly to American society, especially in areas such as business, politics, and the arts.
The “Regions of Honor” initiative is a key aspect of NIAF’s mission to preserve and promote Italian heritage. Each year, NIAF selects a different Italian region to be honored at its annual gala. In 2027, the foundation will organize a series of cultural, educational, and diplomatic events in both the U.S. and Italy to celebrate Abruzzo and Molise’s contributions to the Italian-American community.
The event also served as a platform for strengthening economic and cultural exchanges between the two countries. It emphasized the potential for further collaboration in areas such as tourism, gastronomy, and education. Representatives from both regions discussed the future of bilateral relations and the role of Italian American communities in building bridges between the U.S. and Italy.
This designation not only highlights the rich history of these regions but also serves as a reminder of the enduring ties that bind Italy and the United States, particularly through the shared legacy of Italian immigration.
