I thought I knew what Italian ice was. In my high school days, I briefly worked at a New Orleans-style snowball stand. Same thing, right? It took a visit to the new Surfer Joe's Tropical Ice in Cocoa Beach to make me see the error of my ways.
Where snowballs, snowcones and other chilly treats are ice drizzled in flavored syrup, Italian ice is a flavorful juice made with natural ingredients frozen into a slushy cupful of deliciousness, said Joe Flandreau. He's the Surfer Joe for whom the place is named, though he doesn't have much time for surfing these days.
