“The Bear” actor and chef Matty Matheson is bringing Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches to Detroit this month only with the re-launch of the food cart Detroit City Beef. Opening Sunday at the Skip in the Belt alleyway in downtown Detroit, this marks the second phase of Matheson’s Detroit venture. In July he unveiled a new menu at cocktail bar Standby next door to the Skip.
The menu is simple. Choose an Italian beef sandwich — featuring braised chuck simmered in beef jus on a soft Italian roll and mild or hot giardiniera, all dipped into the jus — or get a vegetarian fried eggplant sandwich with red sauce, mozzarella and your choice of spicy giardiniera or sweet roasted peppers.
