An Italian breakthrough: growing vegetables in space will be possible even without light

In the future, it will be possible to grow vegetables in space, even in the dark: scientists have identified the molecular mechanism that allows certain plants to grow independently of light, which was previously considered essential for proper development.
 
The discovery, published in Plant Communications, is the result of work by an international research team led by Italy's Sapienza University of Rome, with participation from the Italian Space Agency and the University of Pisa.
