Asked how travel has changed since Christopher Columbus' epic voyage to the New World, one wag once observed that Columbus headed for India and wound up in Santo Domingo. Today, if you head to India, you get there. It's your luggage that winds up in Santo Domingo.
Still, in an age of space exploration and supercomputers, the magnitude of Columbus' journey 523 years ago stands as a singular turning point in history — one that, far from being a mere punchline to a joke, continues both to capture the world's imagination and, at times, stoke controversy.
