Bishop Thomas Donato, a Jersey City native and pastor of St. Henry's Church in Bayonne, died tonight, parishioners are posting on the church's Facebook page. Donato, who would have turned 75 in October, was being treated for pancreatic cancer at Toms River Memorial Hospital, friends said.
According to his biography on the Archdiocese of Newark website, Donato attended Holy Rosary Elementary School and St. Michael High School in Jersey City, then entered the College Seminary at Seton Hall University, graduating in 1961. He continued his theological studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington and was ordained on May 29, 1965.
