A statue of Christopher Columbus in Newark’s Washington Park was taken down overnight but in neighboring Elizabeth, Mayor J. Christian Bollwage has no plans to upset the Italian-American community by removing a monument in New Jersey’s fourth largest city.
Elizabeth Mayor J. Christian Bollwage has no plans to remove the statue of Christopher Columbus from its perch at O’Brien Field in the city’s Petersburg section. “In keeping with the movement to remove symbols of oppression and white supremacy, we have decided to remove the statue of Christopher Columbus from Washington Park,” Mayor Ras Baraka said.
