Christopher Columbus statues have joined the ranks of Confederate and other memorials being taken down in the wake of the killing of George Floyd by police in Minnesota. In East Hanover, the target is the statue of Columbus in Village Square Park on Ridgedale Avenue placed by the East Hanover Italian American Club in the 1990s.
The club is now circulating a petition fighting back at two Facebook posts that no longer exist that had discussed the Columbus statue. The initial Facebook post was posted on the “East Hanover Information” Facebook page after Floyd's May 26 death. The site is administered by grades K-8 Board of Education member Sean Sullivan. Sullivan took down the post when comments to it continued to be negative.
