In 2014, Pope Francis designated Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church a minor basilica. Founded in 1908, this Roman Catholic parish originally served the Italian community of Central Youngstown, OH. In the following interview, La Gazzetta and Pastor Monsignor Michael J. Cariglio discuss the church's new status.
La Gazzetta (LG): Thank you for welcoming La Gazzetta to the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. To begin, Monsignor, what is your history?
Monsignor Cariglio (MC): I was born and raised in Ravenna, OH, one of five children. My father is from Puglia and my mother from Abruzzo. I've been the pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel for 29 years. Recently, St. Anthony of Padua in Brier Hill was merged with Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
