Two Italian-American deputy fire chiefs who retired last year in the face of a budget squeeze are suing the city of Passaic for alleged discrimination, claiming they were unlawfully forced out to make way for Hispanic officers.

Michael Martocci and John Scangarello, who left the department after 27 years of service, say in court papers that city officials had threatened them with demotion as part of a larger reduction in force that would result in layoffs of about 20 firefighters and demotion of all officers.
