When it comes to the gangster film genre, there are several directors that immediately come to mind such as Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Sidney Lumet. One director that is no stranger to the gangster genre, is the subject of a new insightful documentary by Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow called De Palma about director Brian De Palma.
Born on September 11, 1940 in New Jersey, the son of a surgeon, De Palma grew up in an Italian American family. Entering Columbia college as a physics major, De Palma would eventually enroll in the newly co ed Sarah Lawrence College in Westchester County and pursue a career in film. De Palma's early film influences were movies such as Vertigo, Citizen Kane and filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock.
