Gray Malin’s keen eye for Italy shines in new book

Though it was a series shot in Marfa that helped launch his career, these days, Dallas-born Gray Malin jet-sets to the world’s most beautiful destinations to photograph his signature aerials. But he has a special love affair with Italy (don’t we all), which he first visited while studying abroad in college. At the time, he stuck to major cities but did manage to see the seaside villages of Cinque Terre — that later sparked his imagination as a budding photographer.

Cinque Terre is one of the Italian regions captured in his latest wanderlust-inducing coffee-table book, “Gray Malin: Italy” (Abrams, $40), for which he took five road trips over the course of six years. In 144 vivid color pages, Malin trains his lens — from land, air and sea — on the packed beaches of the Amafli Coast, the historic villas surrounding Lake Como, the terraced limestone cliffs of Sicily, the white-washed houses in rugged Puglia and the classic glamour of Portofino, among other locales.
