For this year's Murfee Worsham screening, we offer 'Rome Open City' (Italy, 1945, 103 min.), a foundational film for Italian Neorealism and all of postwar European cinema, directed by Roberto Rossellini. In Nazi occupied Rome, a resistance fighter takes refuge in the home of a young engaged couple; tragedy ensues.
Featuring a towering performance by Anna Mangnani, one of the most famous in all of cinema, with a screenplay by the young Federico Fellini, the film presents life in wartime Rome as it is, sullied and melodramatic. Winner of the Grand Prize at Cannes in 1946 and the New York Critics Circle Award. Of course, Rossellini would go on to cofound the Rice Media Center, but that is another story... This film screening is free and open to the public.
