We are excited to announce the publication of Italian American Review Volume 6, Number 1! Volume 6, Number 1 is a special issue on organized crime that grew out of the Calandra Institute's seventh annual conference, titled "MAFIAs: Realities and Representations of Organized Crime" (April 25-26, 2014).
While the scope of the conference included manifestations of organized crime from throughout the world, the articles in this special issue focus on Italian American themes, with Jane Schneider's contribution based on her keynote. The book, film, digital media, and exhibition reviews in 6.1 discuss works that deal with Italian diasporic communities in places such as Australia; Connecticut; Gloucester, MA; Nebraska; and Pennsylvania. Among the topics addressed are Frank Sinatra, Jewish migration from Italy, Neapolitan song, immigrant newspapers, backyard gardens, language, religious devotion, photography, and World War II.
